The competition is named in honor of Leopold Semenovich Auer, a famous native of Austria-Hungary, musician and teacher, founder of the Russian violin school.
The idea and history of the first violin competition belongs to the Master himself. In 1908 the Conservatory celebrated the 40th anniversary of Prof. Auer and it was decided to hold an international competition named after him. A fundraiser was announced, in which Leopold Auer himself, his students and the royal court took main part.
In 1911, at the First International Leopold Auer Violin Competition. Violinist Mikhail Piastro became the winner.
After that, the competition was not held. The reason was the immigration abroad of L. Auer himself and many of his students before the October Revolution of 1917
Work on the project to revive the Competition began in 2013.
The Leopold Auer Society has collected a huge amount of historical facts,
that helped to find the descendants of the Great Teacher and enlist their support.
The organizers did their best for the competition to continue its glorious and important history.
Thus, since 2014, the Competition has resumed its activities, annually takes place in St. Petersburg and over the past 7 years has enriched its wonderful history with the names of young talents from many countries of the world.
